Corner Talk: It was quite a treat to have Lomax Spaulding on board with us at this year's 21st Annual Carolina Beach Music Awards on November 11th -15th in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Lomax arrived on Thursday evening and performed impromptu with several bands throughout the weekend as well as his planned performances Saturday evening and Sunday at the Awards Show at the Alabama Theatre. Most if not all of the attendees were aware of his huge hit Swing It and he did not disappoint at any time during the four days.

Our Southern Soul attendee list was pretty light this year in comparison to recent Awards weekends BUT the history of Soul music was certainly well represented. From the Showmen to an original member of the Chairmen of the Board, Danny Woods was there with General Johnson from the beginning. Although not in the best of health in recent years, Danny gave us stellar performances on the Sunday Awards show on Higher And Higher and the Chairmen's 1971 Billboard charter Pay To The Piper on which Danny originally sang lead.

Knoxville, TN native Clifford Curry was a 1955 member of Savoy label recording artists the Five Pennies. He went on to an outstanding solo career that has continued to this day. He has been a faithful contributor to Beach music for many years, giving up such hits as Baby Won't You Shag With Me and his current charter, Cold Beer Hot Women. Clifford has also had some health issues in recent years but was able to perform his latest hit for us. It was so fitting that his album of the same name won the Solo Album of the Year Award. Clifford was almost overcome with joy by this win.

We have been graced for the last four years in a row by the presence of legendary Stax Records singer/songwriter Mr. Eddie Floyd. Eddie turned 80 years old in 2015 but looks to be not a day over 60. What a steel trap mind he has, I cannot stump him on any trivia on Classic Soul music! It is always quite a treat to have Eddie with us all weekend and perform in the Awards Show.

Even though current Southern Soul artist Larome Powers (Gerald Robinson)  was unable to attend, the song he composed for the Blackwater Rhythm & Blues Band, Dance Tonight, won him the Songwriter of the Year Award. This amazing tune, currently number one on the Beach charts (and #1 here at the Corner this month), also was the recipient of the Song of the Year Award. Gerald has written many songs over the years, including tunes recorded by Johnnie Taylor, The Dramatics, Joyce Lawson, Harvey Scales, Kenne Wayne and Jesse James.  He has toured with such acts as Millie Jackson, Lenny Williams, War, Joe Tex and the Gap Band.

Mound Bayou, Mississippi native O.B. Buchana has been honing his craft as a Southern Soul performing artist for many years. He began singing in the church choir at the age of eight and by the time he was a teenager, he was the lead singer of the Gospel group The Mighty Suns of God. Turning to secular music, O.B. signed with the Blues River recording label in the early '90's. He had a smash single on the label entitled Back Up Lover. O.B. also recorded on the Paula and Suzie Q labels before signing with the Memphis based Ecko Records label in 2004.

O.B.s latest, Mississippi Folks, was just released this month, making it an even dozen albums for him on the Ecko label. A Best Of CD was also released on this oustanding artst by Ecko earlier this year. The advance track from the latest album was Ghetto Funk - you know where the idea and beat for that one came from! The title track has also garnered some recent attention on some of the DJ charts. Our pick here at the Corner as well as on the Boogie Report Top 20 Countdown is the jammin' Swing On. A strong Reggae groove can be heard on the first pass of Tasty Girl, while the remix of the tune brings it back down to it's Southern Soul roots. Tip It Up also has some of that Reggae flavor. You can hear those smoky soulful strains in You Don't Want A Good Man and If We Steal Away. One thing we have always said about O.B. is that his singing style has been consistent throughout his career, focusing on down home soulful Blues, juke joint style, Mississippi country all the way with a voice that is easily recognizable in its rich uniqueness. Eleven tracks of pure O.B. here, another solid release by this outstanding artist!

CDS Records gives us another edition of the Club Southern Soul series, this one is number 4. The first volume appeared in 2010, and all have focused on either recent hits or new material from top quality artists. Sir Jonathan Burton's Southern Soul Showdown has been on our Top 45 the past several months - the Throwdown Remix leads off this compilation. Too Much Booty Shakin' was the biggest hit in recent years for Sir JB - get ready for the Fabulous Abracadabulous Remix featured here! My Main Squeeze is a new and exciting groove from hard charging Louisiana native Ghetto Cowboy. Another new one that sounds like steppin' dynamite is Let Me See You Back It Up by veteran Charles Wilson. The Ricky White Shuffle and Shake (Remix), both from 2013, remind us that this fine artist has been front and center for quite some time now.

I'm A Woman was a 2012 track hit for the dynamic Nellie Tiger Travis. The same is true for outstanding California based singer Vel Omarr, who had a hit that year with Everybody's Dancin'. The club version of one of Stephanie Pickett's biggest singles, Only Time I Get Lonely emphasizes just how good that song was when it was first released. Thirteen tracks in all, there are also solid previous tunes from label producer Carl Marshall, Stan Mosley, the late Floyd Taylor and a recent posthumus release (Pull Up From Behind) by the late Bobbye 'Doll' Johnson. An overall good cross section of many of the artists that have been associated with CDS over the last several years!

Blues Mix 18 - Southern Soul Party came out in late September. Holy cow Ecko Records, when was Blues Mix, Volume 1 and who was on it? The answer - it was released in October of 2010 featuring Donnie Ray, Ms. Jody, O.B. Buchana, David Brinston, Sweet Angel, Earl Gaines and Luther Lackey. Interestingly enough, Donnie Ray, Ms. Jody, O.B. Buchana and David Brinston are still featured on this latest mix release. The first two cuts are new - O.B.s Ghetto Funk was mentioned above as being the lead off track on his latest album. The same holds true for Let's Hear It For The DJ by Jaye Hammer.

Two of the Corner's favorite previous hit tracks are featured here - I Like This Place by Carl Sims and I Didn't Come To Sit Down from Sheba Potts-Wright. I'm also liking two relatively new artists to the Ecko lineup - Clayton Knight gives us two rockin' grooves with A Man Who Understands and I'm So Tired while newcomer LeAundra Lively shines on He Put A Rockin' Chair On Me. There is a remix of David Brinston's Somebody's Cuttin' My Cake, the album title on his 1999 drop on the MET label and re-released by Ecko in 2007. Donnie Ray's 2015 of DJ Don't Slow The Party Down is also re-released here in remix form. Twelve cuts in all, I am taking bets now as to when we will see Volume 19,  LOL!
